What is a Spiritual Conversation?

This was the opening discussion of a fascinating and informative evening we had seated around the lounge at Highfield Church Centre in September. A group of Volunteers and Chaplains came together to talk further about how we can encourage meaningful conversations throughout the work we do with Older People.

Using the ‘Woman at the Well’ story – Erica looked at how Jesus made conversation with ordinary people and how he took it to a deeper level. Our Chaplain for Dementia, Dave Hendra gave two methods for instigating Spiritual Conversation –

The Spiritual Care Assessment and The Dance Analogy

Cath Wood spoke about taking time to prepare yourself for a Spiritual Conversation in thought and prayer, and utilising resources that may be helpful.  And Ros Simpson led a session on the practicalities around ‘Lone Working’.

Some feedback from one of our Volunteers:

“I felt particularly blessed by two or three encounters I had with others, so am thankful for that too, as well as the content of the evening … and the cuppa and munchies!”

“Three points I learned or appreciated ….

1.    The challenge of how I can affirm the person I’m with and get on their wavelength.
2.    Embedding in my mind there is always a 3rd Person (Holy Spirit) in the conversation and to engage with the Holy Spirit as much as with the person I’m engaging with.
3.    Being alongside someone, listening, is an act of God and can be life-transforming.  I can under-value the power of listening well and the impact it has on others.

and perhaps a 4th one …
4.    Having a box of chocolates (or similar) on the bus!  Sounds crazy. but I reckon it’s quite a good door opener!!”
