Ageing and Care in the Global South: are there lessons for us?
With Dr Elisabeth Schroeder-Butterfill, Associate Professor in Gerontology
We gathered at Highfield Church Centre for an inspirational evening learning from the Global South about ageing. Dr Schroeder-Butterfill has been conducting research in Indonesia for many years, and shared a video to encourage people there to consider supporting older people in their own homes, when they are less mobile. It was salutary to see how little statutory support was available, but really heartening to see how amazing families, and neighbourhoods were stepping in to support people in their communities.
Here is a link to a Video that summarises Elisabeth and her Team’s work in Indonesia.
Guests were plied with a delicious array of delectable nibbles, wine and non alcoholic cocktails which lent a celebratory feel to the evening.
Esther Clift also shared a brief summary of her research looking at spirituality in the ‘informal settlements’ in Nairobi Kenya.
There were lots of questions from an incredibly attentive and engaged audience and there was a real appetite to do something like this again!
Huge thanks to everyone who made the evening possible!
